More music majors are doubling down on their dreams—pairing performance or music education with entrepreneurship and redefining what it means to succeed in the arts.
If you're a high school student who sees your music talent as more than just performance—who's already brainstorming business ideas, side hustles, or thinking about owning your future—this path might be for you.
For today's musicians, the stage isn't the only place where success happens. More and more students are pairing a Music major with a second major in Entrepreneurship — and it's changing the game.
Whether you dream of launching a music app, managing artists, producing your own albums, or building a record label from the ground up, this double major helps you create opportunities, not just wait for them. Combining music with entrepreneurship is often easier than you think — especially when the music major is a BA instead of a BM.
University of North Texas (UNT):
Allows BA in Music + BA in Entrepreneurship. BM students can only double within other BM fields or pursue a dual degree.
Florida State University (FSU):
Students must be in the BA in Music program to double major with entrepreneurship or business.
University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC):
BA in Music + BA in Business/Entrepreneurship is allowed. BM students are restricted to music-only double majors.
University of the Pacific:
BA in Music students can double major in business or entrepreneurship outside the conservatory. BM students are limited to conservatory pairings.
Rice University:
Rice's flexible structure allows pairing a BM in Music with a BA in Entrepreneurship or Business under its cross-degree double major model.
You'll take classes in finance, leadership, marketing, and innovation alongside music theory and performance
Internships and side projects can double as course credit or capstone work
You may pitch real business ideas in competitions or showcases
Pairing music with entrepreneurship gives you control over your future. You don't have to wait to be discovered. You can create, launch, and lead from day one.
Whether you want to tour the world, build a fanbase from your bedroom studio, or revolutionize the music industry with your own platform, entrepreneurship gives you the toolkit to make it happen. It empowers you to think like a leader, act like a founder, and perform with purpose.
And the best part? You're not limited to one path. You can mix performance with production, artistry with analytics, and creativity with commerce. In today's industry, the most successful musicians are often the most business-savvy, and this double major gives you the power to be both.
But why not just major in Music Business or Music Entrepreneurship from the start? Here's the difference:
A music business degree often focuses on the industry itself—management, publishing, contracts. It prepares you for roles within the music industry. But when you major in Performance, Composition, or Music Education, and add a major in Entrepreneurship or Business Administration, you're building two core identities: artist and strategist. You're developing your craft while learning how to build something bigger with it. This double major gives you the freedom to define success on your own terms—whether that's founding your own company, booking your own tours, or creating new ways for people to experience music.
Whatever direction you take, pairing music with entrepreneurship means you'll graduate not just with talent—but with a plan.
Artist Manager: A professional who handles the business aspects of a musician's career, including contracts, scheduling, marketing, and career development.
Bachelor of Arts (BA): A college degree typically focused on a broader liberal arts education; in music, it often provides more flexibility to double major outside of music.
Bachelor of Music (BM): A specialized degree with a stronger emphasis on performance, theory, and music-specific coursework. May limit the ability to double major in non-music fields.
Capstone Project: A culminating academic assignment or presentation that demonstrates a student's knowledge and skills, often involving a performance, business plan, or original research.
Composition: The act of creating original music, either through traditional notation or digital software.
Double Major: Pursuing two areas of study within one degree program, like Music and Entrepreneurship, usually completed within a standard four-year track.
Dual Degree: Earning two distinct college degrees (e.g., a BM and a BS in Business), often requiring more time and credit hours than a double major.
Entrepreneurship: The study and practice of launching and running a business or creative venture, such as starting a record label or music tech company.
Internship: A temporary professional experience (often during college) that allows students to gain real-world experience in their field of interest.
Licensing: Securing legal permission to use a musical work in media like film, TV, or advertising, typically in exchange for a fee.
Music Industry: The business sector that encompasses the creation, production, promotion, distribution, and monetization of music.
Music Marketing Specialist: A professional who promotes artists, albums, and events using digital and traditional marketing strategies.
Music Producer: A person who oversees and shapes the sound of a recording or performance, often managing both artistic and technical elements.
Performance Degree: A music degree focused on developing the skills needed to perform professionally, such as in orchestras, bands, or solo work.
Pitch Competition: An event where students present business ideas to judges, often for feedback, networking, or funding opportunities.
Private Lesson Platform: A digital service that connects music teachers with students for virtual or in-person private instruction.
Record Label: A company that signs musicians, produces recordings, and distributes and markets music.
Startup: A newly established business, often technology-driven, designed to grow quickly and solve a unique problem—such as a new way to distribute music.
Sync Deal: A contract that allows music to be synchronized with visual media, such as films, commercials, or video games.
University Conservatory: A specialized school within a university focused solely on music and the performing arts, often with rigorous audition requirements.
Objective: Students will be able to identify and evaluate the benefits of combining a Music major with an Entrepreneurship major, and articulate how this academic pairing can align with their personal career aspirations in the music industry.

Title: My Music + Entrepreneurship Blueprint
Instructions:
Due Date: [Instructor to insert date]
Grading Criteria: Clarity, depth of analysis, personal insight, and alignment with article content.
Dear Band Parents,
Each year, I watch my students pour their hearts into scales, show sets, and solo work. They dream big—some want to teach, others want to perform, and a few are already sketching out logos for businesses they plan to launch someday. And believe it or not, those dreams aren't as far apart as they seem.
I recently came across an article I'd love every parent in our program to read. It's called "From Stage to Startup: Why Music Majors Are Choosing Entrepreneurship as a Second Major," and it's available now on Accoladi.com. The piece dives into something I see more and more of: students who want to major in music and build something entirely their own—whether that's a label, a lesson platform, or the next game-changing music app.
In today's world, a music degree isn't just about performance anymore—it can be a launchpad for innovation, leadership, and real-world impact. This article lays out how students are pairing their artistry with entrepreneurial studies to create careers that are as dynamic as their talents.
It even highlights specific schools—Rice University, Florida State University, University of North Texas, and more—that make this pairing possible. If your child is considering becoming a music major, or even just curious about how to turn their passion into a profession, this is must-read. It's inspiring, informative, and filled with ideas that could change the trajectory of a young musician's life.
Please take a moment this week to read it yourself. Talk about it with your child. It's never too early to dream big—and plan smart.
Sincerely,
